Hi all,

I got a summons to attend jury dury but it was mailed to an old address.

I received it at short notice and jury service is required in about one weeks time.

Will there be any visable excuses to be exempt.

Has anyone on here an experience with this?

Are the courts enforcing penalties also?

why ask here, why not ask the contact on the letter? or even go to the link online they sent, explain the situation and no doubt you will be excused

probably 75% of people dont turn up

presume the latter, like they give you plenty of notice for obvious reasons

It was mailed to the address where you are registered to vote. Did you update your details on the electoral register?

If only sent a few days you could say it’s to late to arrange it be fine but if plenty of notice it’s not their fault if you don’t live there anymore and the people who do didn’t inform you

Phone them - explain you know it’s your duty but letter has just arrived or brought to your attention - they’ll understand and excuse you on this occasion

Because that's the treatment you get on the legal forum. Loads of questions shot towards you in quick succession and for a finish everything is actually your own fault for being an idiot that doesn't understand the legal system. It's the most patronising forum in all of boards.

Jury duty is quite easy to avoid if you have a decent excuse. It happened me a few years back and as it turned out it was due to start when I was flying out for a holiday, ended up being selected and had the boarding pass printed in my hand, was excused when I explained the situation. Other ways to avoid it can be conflict of interest depending on what the case is. If you know one of the guards involved in the trial for example.

Prove I got the letter, I have loved at multiple address both in Ireland and abroad, so where was it sent?

I was called in a long while ago. Court staff were flat out ringing all the no shows even though their was about 50 of us that turned up. We were all in the court room. They started going through the motions of selecting and so many had excuses. Anything at all and the judge let them go really. One person just said he recognised the man. So I wasn't surprised then their was so many of us called in.

It was a trial for driving a defective car, causing death. When I saw the guy saying not guilty and heard the gist of the story and we were gonna be seeing pictures etc, I didn't actually want to be there then. It's very serious/important job. I'd never done anything like it. It was gonna take up to 4 days apparently.

I was very happy I wasn't picked.
