First time buyer - up to €10k

Hey, first time car buyer here. A bit overwhelmed by the amount of makes and models. Just looking for a simple, reliable car. It has to be automatic transmission.

I guess I'm looking for "you can't go wrong with..." types of recommendations.

I did my driving classes in a Suzuki Swift so I suppose that would be a decent start since I know how it feels. Are they any good?

Max budget is 10k.

Anything Japanese. Toyota, Suzuki, Nissan, Mazda, Honda etc

Just be warned pretty much anything you buy will be a Japanese import and may not have an alarm or immobiliser so you might need to get one installed.

You can't go wrong with a Toyota Corolla hatchback, solid as a rock and cheap to run. Little bit more pricey than competitors but great cars.

Some great hatchbacks out there for a first time buyer ie, Ford Fiesta, Opel Astra, Mazda 3.

What's wrong with an EV for a first time buyer? Every EV will be an auto. Plenty are in budget and with decent range too. A lot less to go wrong and much cheaper to run. The OP just needs to know what he is buying and what the needs and limitations are if going EV...same as if he goes with a 4 pot petrol, or diesel.

Won't they need a home charger and (A) have to deduct that cost from their 10k budget and (B) need to own their own house?

To be fair I don’t know of any first time drivers who go electric. Ioniq is a big car too.

I don't have a easy way to charge a car at my house, so I reckon hybrid or fuel is where I'm going.

With my budget of up to 10k a lot of hybrids are 10 ish years old. Would the battery in them last longer than that?

My young lad was looking at a Honda Shuttle online. I have no idea of their size. Anyone know if they are reliable as they are probably imports and what size of car do they resemble? It's hard to tell from the photos.

Very reliable but I think the gearbox in the newer model is expensive to fix.

Big enough cars, I believe they are Skoda Superb estate sized. You can check the exact dimensions online.
