According to their coverage map here, their coverage right in the middle of the city centre is pretty ****..

Any reason for this? What are people's opinions of the service? Currently on 4G with them for €9.99 for life but thinking of upgrading as I may need to use it for tethering for a short while in the next couple of months.

As an aside, do people prefer dongles or teathering directly to their phones, is there any pro/s cons of one vs the other for that?

MMC (Eir) are heavy on street monopoles. Very few of them in the city center but their coverage never seemed lacking all the same.

Generally the dongles/mifi devices people buy have pretty inferior radios. Telcos still sell CAT4 4G routers when flagship phones are CAT20 and up. If you aren't spending €300 using your phone may be faster.

    Huawei B818 4G from €38, LTE CAT19

    ZTE MC801A 5G from €165, LTE CAT22

Dongle , as mobile unit, handy to carry around, but your phone serve the same and, as per above post, with way better capabilities.

Proper 4G or 5G router along with WiFi gives you wired connection option, some configurable network controls as well allow external antenna* if signal boost needed.

Note* - not all routers have external antenna ports
