Deadline for applying for JB

I've been checking the following link but maybe someone can break it down for me:

Can't post links - it's called "Operational Guidelines: Claims and Late Claims"

Here is the scenario: if you get redundant, you are supposed to apply for JB on the first day of unemployment, provided you satisfy all conditions.

What will happen if you don't apply right away but let's say after a week or a month? Provided you are not looking to get paid from the first day of unemployment but only from the date of your application. Can you do that and still qualify from the date of claim?

The reason being simply is that you won't be in position to seek work during the first several weeks after the end of your previous employment.

Or is it better to notify social welfare office on the first day of unemployment and tell them that you will make a claim later on?
