Has anyone seen the new platforms at Galway Station?

It would be a bit difficult, as they aren't built yet. Work has only recently started. The revamped station won't be finished until 2026.

These pictures look like a very narrow centre platform anyways

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,287 ✭✭✭✭LXFlyer

They are only starting the works.

There is a long way to go. I wouldn’t be judging anything yet.

Those L-shaped slabs are only part of the structure, they are not the finished platforms.

The existing second track in the main shed has been lifted, and will be gone for a year.

that second track was only relaid just over a year ago

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 205 ✭✭seekers

looks like the relayed track was removed as part of the renovation works

    Looking forward to the improvements.

Dont know about anyone else but always found Galway station to be one of the most depressing ever

I see it's to get new services too. Two extra from Dublin and two extra departures. a great service. The late one should ne popular for the summer

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 169 ✭✭scrabtom

There's a lot of competition in that space.

Colbert in Limerick would be my WOAT I'd say, quite a few questionable characters around the place, and it always seemed to somehow be colder inside than it is outside. Oh and often full of pigeons flying around.

Kent in Cork and Plunkett in Waterford are also grim. Now that I think of it actually, they're nearly all fairly shite.

I don't think I've never been to a covered train station that isn't full of pigeons. It's a weird thing to put on Colbert Station.

Unrelated to Ceannt but I think the worst station in Ireland is Mallow, Co. Cork. Coldest place in Ireland!

found the fella who’s never been to Ballybrophy

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 679 ✭✭✭feargantae

Ballybrophy when it was about to get mothballed was grim alright, but now with the new signs and maintenance that's been going on it's a grand little station

Limerick has had work done with the new bus station development so ought to be improved now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,168 ✭✭✭Christy Browne

And Waterford’s brand new station is being built as part of the North Quays development https://waterfordnorthquays.ie/buildings/

The new bus station in Limerick, while welcome isn't very big. and the sums of money spent on these places

This means more people going to trains will be passing through the people in queues for busses. Messy.

Busses to the left, trains straght on. Whats messy about that. Could not be simpler and easier.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,039 ✭✭✭✭Geuze

    I was there today.

All pax leaving a train must now walk along the path on Station Road, and so mix in with bus pax waiting for busses.

Whereas before, train pax could leave by the western exit, direct to Eyre Square, or else leave by the main entrance, and avoid some (not all) of the bus queues.

It sounds messy but Hopefully the new station will be worth the wait. I still can't understand why they relayed the track within the station only to dig it up a year later.

It looks like one of the platforms will be outside the station

Presumably because there was no guarantee at the time that the funding would be approved for the station redevelopment.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,287 ✭✭✭✭LXFlyer

As with any works, there's going to be disruption.

The long term benefits will outweigh that disruption.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 205 ✭✭seekers

they've been talking about it for long enough. as with a lot of the other rail projects.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,287 ✭✭✭✭LXFlyer

That doesn’t equate to funding actually being allocated.

The track clearly needed to be renewed at the time, and safety will always dictate the ongoing maintenance programme.

true. I know the cross over wasn't in use for a long time since tge ICR sets came in

What is the max length of an ICR on the Galway route?

    The ground level views

aren't quite as good as yours from altitude @seekers

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 205 ✭✭seekers

These are excellent. A lovely record too of what's happening. I'm wondering how marrow the platforms will be

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,170 ✭✭✭Paddico

In the second photo, whats the building in the background used for?

Looks like lots of space there

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 169 ✭✭scrabtom

I haven't been there for a few years to be fair, but my abiding memory of regular travels through it as a child was that there was always fights outside it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,698 ✭✭✭✭Itssoeasy

well I don’t think there’s fights outside it now. Now in the general area of the station ? Put it this way I wouldn’t walk bar the railway bridge after dark. But Kent station, and I’m probably biased being from cork but I think it’s one of the nicest stations around.

It's the old goods shed, remained in use for freight traffic until the early 2000s. No idea what it's used for today, if anything.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 205 ✭✭seekers

went down there today and I see there's great progress on the new pllatforms

The track layout in the station seems to have changed. I saw one train parked at one of the new platforms last weekend
