Friend's wife coming up to 66. For a full Contributory Pension she will need 2080 contributions. She currently has about 650 from working and about 1700 from time caring for a handicapped child. Will she be limited to the max of 1040 credits towards the 2080 in this case, or has the limit changed with the recent changes to the Home Caring Periods Scheme?

The new TCA calculation system limits the use of caring credits to 1040- no change there.

As far as I know ALL credits still count under the old average calculation which is still in use. So your friend's wife has about 2350 credits and contributions. To find out if she would qualify for the maximum rate under that system, count the number of years from your friend's wife's first year in employment to the last tax year before she reaches 66. Divide the total number of contributions and credits through the number of years and you have her yearly average PRSI rate. Check out the band of payment your friend's wife is in under this link:

    Good luck to you!
