Estate- 40k to spend

I’m on the lookout for a new estate. Currently an e class owner (e300 hybrid) which garages are giving me 12-14k for.

I love a sporty estate (not a suv person) it must have a decent boot. Looking at 2019/2020 E Classes (not De), bmw 5 series touring and the A6 avant, Volvo etc

i only cover about 12,000km a year. Fairly light driver, cycle to work etc.

Would pcp make sense rather than an outright/financed second hand?

I'd doubt you will get PCP on a 4 or 5 year old car, generally it's on new or nearly new cars.

At only 12k km per year I'd say away from diesel. Petrol cars in that segment are rare which leaves you with petrol hybrids. BMW 5 series touring only available as a PHEV with the facelift in 2020. A6 Avant I don't think is available in PHEV, Volvo V90 only available in diesel so E Class PHEV maybe only real option with a large boot but finding one for 40k could be tricky.

But I don’t know the market.

I saw a low mileage e class for 41k in Stillorgan today, only 44k kms. Does a low mileage car make sense for someone doing low mileage?

Ok, I get what your asking now. PCP rates are still pretty high especially on new premium stuff but you would have to do the maths on the deals versus a regular loan on a 4 or 5 year old car.

Low mileage cars can make alot of sense as long as they still have had regular maintenance irrespective of the low mileage.

Me personally I think if you are doing low mileage then a high mileage car makes more sense for two reasons:

You will save thousands on the purchase price buying higher mileage

After a few years the mileage will have averaged out and will eventually be considered low mileage (for the year)

V90 T8 and T6 are phev’s and uniquely don’t have a smaller boot versus the diesels. Strongly recommend one over a diese Merc E class or 5 series and around since 2019 so should be in budget if you can find one

only 1 that I can see in the country. Its a 2021 T6 and its 54k in Spirit.

Theres one in the north that is £30,000, its probably €55k minimum after VRT/VAT etc?

If you want to take a day trip, you can buy in the UK as long as you find a VAT qualifying one - buying a 2021 or newer and you’ll only have the VRT to pay - plus cheaper to buy, this might be one. Should land it for 20k less than the Spirit one

That said it’s interesting only one for sale here, owners must like them and not trade them.

Actually if a V60 is an option this one looks v attractive too up north. Cabin is a bit smaller than V90 but boot is decent

I threw the details of this into the vrt calculator on the revenue and it said €4,030. Presume there would be other costs?

That V60 is on mainland UK plates:

You need to check with the dealer how long it's been in NI. It's listed on the UK MOT website which suggests that it's only recently come into NI probably brought in by the dealer. Normally cars registered in NI would not show on the UK MOT website as the NI MOT is totally different system.

It would need to be registered in NI prior to Brexit or from birth to avoid VAT and customs duty down here on top of VRT.

€40k would get you into a reasonable 520d G31, plenty are around €42-44k so a deal to be done.

First of all - I would like to thank the OP for choosing an estate rather than a bloated SUV/Crossover.

I think with that kind of budget - try to aim something like a 530d - I know there won't be many of them around in the touring variant so you will have to be patient.

As you’ve said, It’s probably a hard ask to find a petrol touring and decent PHEVs are €45-50k+ so it’s likely to be a diesel.

I just think that SUv's are horrendous, im probably shouldnt care, but they look daft in my opinion. I'm going to be selling my E300 2014 soon if anyone is interested, although I would prefer a tradein

Very limited choice for estates, I currently have bmw, previously had Audi a6 and allroad. There are little or no v90s that come up, so prices are high. The a6 avant is rare also, so prices are very high. There are a relatively high amount of BMWs around, both 3 and 5 series. If you can go past 2021 budget wise the 530e is a good sweetspot for low mileage and availability. Can plug it in and get most of a lowish mileage off the battery. Because they are very low tax and vrt a lot of delvers bring the, in so there is enough around to have a few options on what to buy. There is a long thread on here about the 530e in particular.

My first estate was a 14 month old E220 (Premium Plus) back in 2018 (2017 car). Absolutely love it, no intention of changing. If I were to change it, it would be for a newer one (don't see the point in that, not a reg snob).

No hybrid / electric nonsense. Had to have the Nox sensors replaced (warranty) and had to throw in some adblue cleaner as wasn't driving it long / hard enough (now go on a weekly long drive, drive hard to warm up).

Few for sale well within that budget.

It's a UK reg so still VAT and duty required.

On a side note, what is with the photoshopped picture on this ad!? The ones in-front of the grey background are clearly photoshopped (the light on the car doesn't come close to matching the backround) and I'm just not sure why they would be bothered!
