Looking for recommendations between 2 lathes for starting woodturning. An instructor on a course I did recommended a Jet1221 before.

But I have an option to buy a Record Power Coronet Herald and was wondering if anyone had experience between these two lathes and could recommend either?

A newbie to woodturning so any advice appreciated.

    Thanks in advance

i have a 1221VS (well, i just upgraded from it) and it's a great lathe. stupid money now though, new. one comment i would make comparing the two is that the coronet seems to have much greater capacity over the bed - a claimed 21" capacity vs the 12" of the jet. one of the reasons i've upgraded from the jet is i want to turn bigger bowls.

i would be cagey about turning a 21" bowl with a 750W motor, that could be a very hefty bowl, and the lathe is about the same weight.

The Record lathe will definitely allow you to turn a larger variety of items. The thing with lathes is you can turn small items on a larger lathe but can't turn very big items on a small lathe. With the Record lathe the headstock probably swings out over the ways to allow turning of much bigger items.

did you ever make a purchase?

I was very close to buying the Record Power Lathe at the time from someone on adverts and then it was sold before I got the chance. So I never got around to it between one thing and another. But still looking, hopefully purchasing one soon! I've been putting together a workshop (think you commented on that thread a few times also) and have been busy with getting that setup in the meantime.....so the tools are next!!

there's one or two for sale on the classified section on the IWG site - maybe bigger than you want though!

So finally got around to picking up a Record Power Coronet Herald and a set of Robert Sorby chisels during the week. It's a lovely bit of kit. Have it setup now and have been practicing a little bit.

Where to start though?!! Have been watching lots of YouTube videos and have practiced on a few scrap bits of wood lying around. Turned a few small bits and pieces.

I did do a one day course earlier in the year, but other than that I'm a total newbie to it. Anyone have any advice on the best way to get into it going forward?

Where are you based? Evening courses around the country started this week; you'd have missed the first but if there's somewhere near you running a woodturning course with a slot free they would probably let you in.

Also, you're able to go to three meetings of an Irish Woodturning Guild chapter, for free. I'd recommend it, it's often a good way of picking up tips and tricks, and sometimes you might pick up stock.

Im based in Wexford. Gorey CC does evening courses, but none on wood turning unfortunately! Did a woodworking course there last year.

Ill take a look at the local chapter in the Guild and see what's available too. Thanks for that.

yeah, your local chapter meets in Gorey, second monday of each month.

there's a woman called Christien Van Bussel who is based in Arklow, i think, who gives woodturning lessons.

I'd like to keep an eye on this track, if you don't mind.
