NCT Test Failed - Question

Hi i failed the nct. It said this

Side slip alignment test - rear axle -20m/Km Result - Major

Visual Defects - Nearside rear tyre worn Result - Advisory

Does this mean that the tyre failed?

I went to book into a garage and they commented that it could possibly be tracking. I enquired at another place about tyres and a guy told me that I can't track the rear wheels because it's a wheelchair accessible vehicle.

Has anyone ever heard this before?

Failed on tracking alignment. Could be subframe bushings.

They are advising you to change the tyre.

That would have a rear axle as opposed to independent suspension so rear wheels not separately trackable but it can still be setup correctly. It's possible though that you have alot of wear and that may be the main issue that you will need to address.

There won't be adjustment on the rear of that van to just set the direction of the wheels but there may be bushings worn that are causing it to be out of alignment so repairing worn items will bring it back into rough alignment.

The nct requires a very low standard so I'd suggest definitely wear around the rear axle.

As mentioned above, worn subframe bushings would cause the entire rear axle and associated items to move relative to body of the van.

Bring it to a mechanic who will fix the problem, not someone who just gives the Computer says no.

Thanks. I put it through the test to see how it would get on. I just checked all lights and washed.

It's due a service soon so I have it booked in for this and a full check over next week so that should tell me more. After that I will look at the tyres. The rear tyres are well worn so I planned to get maybe 2 tyres and wheel alignment.

I have it about six years and never a problem with it. Once something with a dpf filter due to short drives. I don't carry the heavier wheelchair much as I have a manual wheelchair also.

My daughters Avensis (independent suspension) failed the side slip test due to a worn rear l/h tie rod. The NCT tester marked the worn tie rod with white paint to identify the part to be replaced. Replaced the tie rod, checked alignment, and passed on retest.

I got the service done and the garage said nothing was found worn on the rear. The mechanic said the rear wheels cannot be tracked and when he saw the nct test result he said something goes in the rear axle and it needs to be replaced.

I'm not sure what to do now.

I stand to be corrected on this but is there not an occasional issue with these axels and a repair kit that can be got for them (may be an older version). Something to do with a pivot and needle bearings getting corroded causing the wheels to splay out.

I'd let Citroën have a look. They have an alignment procedure I believe which can cover off some wear but if too bad its probably a reconditioned axle thats needed.

I'd try Citroën and if they can align it, Good. If too worn, don't get them to do the work, take it to local garage who would likely fit a used or reconditioned axle.

That sounds like the old issue on the P.206 as you grab the wheel when jacked up and movement and rust signs on the axle and that tube is brittle in wearing out. Common NCT failures.
