This is an unusual down this time. Facebook, Insta, Messenger and Threads are all down. You are completely kicked out of all and your password to log back in gives you a fatal error as does changing the Password

I have heard that facebook and Google particularly have been trying AI to run things. If so I wonder is this down related .. maybe

Well as i mentioned above ( donning my tinfoil hat ). Today is SUPER TUESDAY in the USA, millions out voting. US politics and media spend a fortune on Facebook and other soc media to get at voters

A bit coincidental? Happened about 10am US time

Mr Putin needs to kill down WhatsApp, and of course Telegram, etc, then Twitter and bring us all in alignment with actual news blackout. Mastodon is a dead space for most, so it’s not the first priority.

Yes i noticed that earlier and believe down detector is getting loads of reports world wide and other sites reporting world wide.

Maybe it was switched off to stop the scammer/spammers ?

A quick poll done today with respect to the FB outage. The 2nd reason is interesting, maybe due to the serious geo political situation the world is in now and thinking such outages could be a precursor to world war

I only noticed the outage because I tried to use my VR headset and it started giving me a weird message. Turns out that meta being down meant that for the duration their hardware was bricked.

My only "social media" outlet is this place. Even then I've cut back a lot since the "upgrade".

I genuinely don't see the appeal. Yes I had Facebook and I still have a Twitter account (that I only use for news or links posted in threads here) and a LinkedIn account (which is nearly a prerequisite if job-hunting or in a management role but which only seems to be a way for sales guys to pitch stuff at me).

My business is my business. Maybe that's the difference.

Well, I have to use it for business/work. When I was without Facebook for a while a couple of months ago I also noticed that many businesses use only FB to inform customers of opening times, news etc. and you could only contact them via Messenger.

Another sad thing was that none of the friends and family living far away were interested in keeping touch via other methods.

I do use FB but mainly for 2 reasons:

1. I am the owner/admin for a 16k members FB group
2. I am in as admin for a few client FB pages

I find FBs niche is definitely GROUPS. Focused topic and can be moderated reasonaly easy

Not necessarily, they often share the same cloud infrastructure. Could be a myriad of things from BGP to a dodgy update. People are too quick to assume some ATP groups involved.

I installed them and blocked all notifications from them. Since I moved abroad I find them handy for stuff like expat facebook groups but that's all I use them for.

A lot of government sites are likely more vulnerable to denial of service attacks so if there was an attack, that's probably the most likely. Doesn't actually mean they have access to anything if that was the case.

Microsoft said Friday it’s still trying to evict the elite Russian government hackers who broke into the email accounts of senior company executives in November and who it said have been trying to breach customer networks with stolen access data.

.. Microsoft said Friday that the hackers stole “secrets” from email communications between the company and unspecified customers — cryptographic secrets such as passwords, certificates and authentication keys —and that it was reaching out to them “to assist in taking mitigating measures.”

Cloud-computing company Hewlett Packard Enterprise disclosed on Jan. 24 that it, too, was an SVR hacking victim and that it had been informed of the breach — by whom it would not say — two weeks earlier, coinciding with Microsoft’s discovery it had been hacked.

“The threat actor’s ongoing attack is characterized by a sustained, significant commitment of the threat actor’s resources, coordination, and focus,” 

“This has tremendous national security implications,” said Tom Kellermann of the cybersecurity firm Contrast Security.

“The Russians can now leverage supply chain attacks against Microsoft’s customers.”

Such high level hacks can also compromise related services? And as of Friday just gone it is a direct admission that Russia is behind these hacks om MS and HP and others

And about this - "significant commitment of the threat actor’s resources, coordination, and focus" - that really does point at state deep pockets to finance such things on on going basis
