Aftermarket reversing camera issue- image flipped

Bought Outlander PHEV in 2021, wasn't going to pay an extra 5k to buy a car a year newer with no difference except higher mileage and reversing camera, so the dealer fitted an aftermarket one for me.

No idea what type it is. Its screen is on the lhs of the normal rear view mirror, camera installed as part of a numberplate surround.

In the last few months it's been on the blink, sometimes stopping completely, sometimes fuzzy image. Lately the image has reversed completely.

Any suggestions where to start? Have NCT next friday, will I get away with it?

If the dealer supplied and fitted it go back to the dealer.

Shouldn't affect the NCT as it's not a requirement to have a camera. The only issue is that you can't record the test so they usually cover the cameras.

Went back to dealer, they couldn't help, as they send it out to a 3rd party to be fitted, and the salesman who arranged it no longer works for them... etc.

Once its not an NCT issue that's fine. My dashcam stopped working long ago (internal battery problem) so that's not an issue.

Lame excuse blaming the salesman. He hardly paid a lad cash to fit it. Surely the garage has an invoice sitting somewhere for this retrofit ?

You've six years coverage for manufacturing faults, warranty irrelevant. Difficult to prove in court but retailers who don't play ball will be found liable in default

There is often a wire loop or link that is cut to invert image depending on what camera is used for.

Any aftermarket camera installer should be able to help.

The normal warranty is long gone, I wouldn't expect the trader to stand over an aftermarket accessory that they had fitted for me, at no cost to me, as a courtesy.

Even the car's manufacture's warranty is very much T&Cs apply at this stage.

I forgot to mention I bought a 2017 model, from a 2nd hand car retailer, who provide a 3 month warranty only.

I'm more interested in finding out how to fix it, than the legal mumbo jumbo to be honest.

Depending on the camera, or rearview mirror, both may have an option to flip the image.

Given the intermittent problems, it's like bad wiring, or water has gotten into the camera itself.

• Camera: Often there will be a wire you cut, or connect to flip the image horizontally or vertically since it can be installed in any direction. A short circuit or broken wire can cause this to happen.
• The mirror itself may have a flipping option too, so see if you can find the user manual online for it.

Sadly no, but I'd say replacing it is the best option.

Oddly my dashcam stopped working around the same time.
