Why can’t we have deregulation in the alcohol industry?

Yes, I’m aware that some countries in Europe particularly the Nordic ones, have worse laws but we’re like Saudi Arabia compared to others.

Can we not have a system whereby alcohol licences aren’t limited and can be applied for by anyone over 18 to serve to anyone over 18.

The licences should not be limited to a certain amount issued and can be used to sell alcohol from the local chipper, the local pizzeria or café.

The licences should cost no more than a nominal monthly admin fee. The purpose of the licences shouldn’t be to create a cartel by restricting competition but to have as a threat of revocation to those selling to underage.

Why is alcohol such a cartel here?

Also, we should completely remove all time limitations on the sale of alcohol or at least apply the same rules to on-sales as off-sales.
