Lidl recycling drill.

I bought a new battery drill recently in Lidl, they wouldn't take my old drill back for recycling. They said it had to be a Lidl drill. I explained to them that legally a similar item should be taken back for recycling, but they weren't budging. I could take a long trip to the council recycling centre or another well known retailer but that would take time and money. Am I correct in thinking that Lidl should recycle the drill?
