What was wrong with classics like My Left Foot? Othello? Or Billy Elliot or MacBeth.

Not sure what I think of this. Barbie could hardly be classified as high art, and would be a stretch to call it a multi threaded plot worthy of examination.

I think they do try to add modern stuff to the syllabus to keep it "modern", but there is a huge back catalogue of truly great films to draw on that have stood the test of time - rather than something that's just de-jour.

The Barbie film has been extremely divisive and you could potentially write quite a bit about it as to how it reflects on societal shifts in the last decade.

Just because something is on a syllabus it does not mean you have to be positive about it as a piece of media when writing an analysis by the way, you could be totally scathing in your approach.

Apart from being essentially an advert. What are your issues with Barbie? It is a well made film. The script is fine. It has subtext, the preformances are fine. Can you please explain why you belive the film holds no artistic merit.

You could buy you'd find it much harder to score marks. It's far easier to be positive about a critically acclaimed film in an exam. Since the goal is to get marks I can guarantee students that though it a pile of shite will write answers that are gushing in it's praise.

I mean you could put any film that has some kind of message on the leaving cert and let students analyse it using their best English, I don't really see the problem.

It's so funny seeing how triggered people get by this stuff nowadays though, I just wish the film had trans characters so it would really set them off.

Do you remember doing leaving cert English? It's not about writing positive film or book reviews. It's critical analysis of themes present in the media and comparatives to similar themes in other media.

Also worth noting that these papers will be corrected by examiners with a multitudes of backgrounds and notions on the film itself.
