2012 Audi A5 Automatic Gear Selector

    Hi All,

Long story, car locked in park and I broke the gear lever trying to release it using the override button in the ashtray. Turns out the bypass wouldn't have helped anyway cause it was the spring loaded button in the gear lever that got stuck/mechanism inside gave up.

So the lever is now in two halves, didn't take much mind you so I wonder if the nipper crawling around the car had assisted this along.

Anyway, it's a 2l TDI, tippy and flappy paddle and I'm wondering if changing the selector is a DIY in the driveway job, does it need to be married to the car via vagcom?

Also, there seems to be a few available, all look visually the same but some of the numbers are different, are these just different batches or could i be in trouble buying the first one I see in a breakers?

Is there anything to watch out for while undertaking this or before I start should I admit defeat, get it towed and fixed by an indy.

    Cheers

Id get the same part number if at all possible or try to find the latest part number for your car and get that one.

Pulled the facia up tonight and it's part number is 8K2713041H and a quick Google tells me it does both diesel and petrol models.

Been doing another bit of research and it looks like the box or cross member needs to be dropped......can anyone confirm??

Im shocked to see that the assembly is removed from below.

Depending on where your damage is, would it be an option to just swap out from the white clips upwards?

Should make for a nice shortcut if your damage is to the upper part.

It's not that the control module has to come out from underneath, the connection that needs to be broken to the box is on the top of the box, the heavy cable coming out through the front of your picture is on the top of the box and from what I have read, the longitudinal mounting of the engine anf box means access to this area is a no go without dropping something but it's not clear from searches what that "something" is.

Whay part of it is broken.

Anything to he said for my suggestion of only swapping the top part of the mechanism?

The gear lever and the internal shaft for the release button. I'm not too sure about the suggestion which to be fair is a good one, I'm not so sure that it comes apart and if it does I'm not too sure with the central console if I'd have the space in there to get it back together.

I am going to have a look at it though, it's a great idea!

I was told today that not having a gearbox malfunction on the dash is a great thing, the car hasn't sensed that there is issues so it's at least located to this part. If something in the box itself was messed up apparently they are very good at letting you know visually.

It's clearly clipped on so should be relatively easy removed even in the car.

Don't forget you would have the replacement part on the bench to work out how to separate it.

Might not be a runner but certainly worth a look.

Car is getting lifted today and being brought to a local garage. I don't have vagcom or that if I did need to reset or marry a unit to the car and time also isn't on my side. It's the crowd who service it so hopefully they'll be kind
