Buzzard?

Wondering if this could be a Buzzard? Seems large, as in 2-3 times that of a crow. By the time I dashed inside and got the lens on the camera it had gained several hundred metres in altitude soaring off ridge lift and was impossible to get a good shot of as it was so small.

They're fairly common nowadays, they gain altitude fairly quickly alright!

I got a similar looking bird earlier today, was wondering if it was a hen harrier.
It was about 3-4km away but hovered long enough to get a grainy pic before plunging down towards something:

That looks like a kestrel to me.
The fact that you saw it hovering is significant.
