Question on gas bill

Here's an odd one. A Bord Gais customer was paying their gas bill by standing order weekly, but had mistakenly got one digit incorrect when they set it up. The SO money was never returned week on week by the bank, so presumably it's been going into someone's gas account, just not theirs.

How can they get their money back? Probably talking around 1000 euro in total. Will Bord Gais engage with them and whoever the other account belongs to? Or will they end up having to go down the legal route?

Where was the mistake initially made - on the banking app or on the energy supplier's app?

If it's the banking app then as it's their mistake and they would have have a number of opportunities to check the number (as they setup the SO), I'd guess that they are at the mercy of the bank. Best grovel and see what they offer.

Talk to BG, it's more than likely on the account, should be showing as credit on the bill. If so, they may not return it, just offset against future bills.

Mistake was made by the customer, they got a digit wrong when the were entering the Gas account into their banking app when setting up the SO. The fact that the payment was taken is leading them to believe that the account number they entered is a valid Bord Gais account, it's just not them. Means then that someone has been getting 100 euro a month paid off their gas bill.

No, it definitely isn't on the account. They are quite substantially in arrears because of it. It's a rented house, the bill is in the LL's name.
