410 shotgun

Hi guys, anyone have any experience with 410,s or see a nice one for sale? I’m toying with the idea of getting one for the summer just for a bit of close range vermin control and also my young lad is getting close to the age that I’d like to get him in to hunting and it would be a friendlier introduction than a 12 gauge. Any thoughts?

Rizzini make a BR110 that shoots just like a 12 bore (smooth steady movements as opposed to being whippy). Saw a lot of UK guys picking up the KOFS at The Shooting Show last year in Birmingham. Cheap enough to take a punt on if you don't feel like breaking the bank. Cartridges are limited and pricey however.

Like a lot of people, I started my shooting career many moons ago with a SBBL Belgian "poachers"[folding ]410. using paper ELEY 2 3/4 in shells.TBH as a starter gun it can be a mistake, as while it has almost zero recoil the Bore[as the 410 isn't a shotgun gauge] can cause you as a beginner to miss a lot and get discouraged.I almost gave up on it until I finally figured out how leading a flying target worked and how to take my time in a hurry to get the gun in position and hammer back, lead and fire in less time than with a 12 gauge. Once I had that figured I'd knocked everything from snipe to geese with this little gun.

Plenty of these little guns in SBBL, or DBBL for sale in the UK, as they were as common as anything in England in Victorian times and freely sold before the advent of Shotgun certs in the UK and at handy money too today.Like 80 StG starting and upwards Check out guntrader.co.uk or gunstar.co.uk.

As said the ammo selection isn't great around here for them and the selection isn't very cheap either. So weigh up the options on cheap old gun with an odd chamber that can only take 2.0 or 2.5 in shells.Or a modern gun that can take 3 in shells,but costs more as a starter gun.

Either way once you master a 410 and can hunt well with one or bust clays...Folks will look at you with respect!

A 28 bore shotgun could be another calibre worth considering.

Have never seen either of the "ladies' gauges"[24 ,28] in real life or even advertised for sale anywhere.

Hi,

I'd a Webley & Scott bolt action 410, many years ago. It was okay for very close range, but I always felt that it lacked a bit of a "punch".

I later had a single barrel 20g Pedretti, which also folded, like Grizz's old shotgun. While relatively cheap at the time, i was far more fond of it, then the 410, tbh.

And then, I got a colour television 😉😂

If it were me buying, I'd go for the 20 bore, tbh. You'll get ammunition a little easier, and probably more of a selection, not to mention you'll get greater distance etc. I don't think recoil will be an issue either, tbh.

@Kran I would consult this excellent chart from JR before deciding.

I came on to mention the relationship between actual recoil of a heavy 12 gauge vs a light 20 gauge( a lot of kids & ladies guns are lightened quite a bit, and result in a much sharper recoil than you'd think), but he beat me to it.

Suffice to say, 410 is a fine small game and short range cartridge, but obviously has it's limitations related to it's size.

Also felt recoil is definitely a subjective thing, some people percieve my 12 gauge as recoiling worse than my 20, but in terms of recoil energy vs weight the 20 has far more recoil due to it's lightness.

Thanks lads, given me a bit to think about. I’ve looked at as many online gun shops here as I could find and not much of anything about really. I did see one of the Kofs 28 gauge and it looked like a nice gun. I must visit my local gun dealer and see what he could actually order in. I do like the idea of either a semi auto or single shot as I want to keep it to one barrel to limit weight. I came across the Henry lever action 410 which I do like the look of.
