Thoughts on a diesel Passat with the following main dealer service history?

    Oct 2016 - Delivery inspection

    June 2017 - 11k - Inspection with oil change

    April 2020 - 99k - Inspection with oil change

    April 2021 - 110k - Inspection with oil change

    Mar 2022 - 126k - Inspection with oil change

    Oct 2022 - 142k - Inspection with oil change

    Sep 2023 - 160k - Inspection with oil change

    (all kms)

Two owners. The second appears to have minded it well with fairly regular main dealer services.

The first owner has a gap after June 2017 (11k) . Obviously it may have been serviced independently but nobody can confirm that for me.

The car ticks all the boxes but what would you do?

Would your presumption be that it was serviced independently or that the service interval light was ignored for 3 years and 87k kms?

Would that service history gap put you off if it ticks every other box?

Well its been driven all the way to 160k so it must be fine. I’d imagine it was serviced at some point during the gap

I suppose the concern is what effect does not servicing a car for nearly 90k kms have on the life expectancy of the engine.

I'm presuming the car was under warranty, and in order to maintain that warranty you would have to have it serviced? It may have been serviced independently with genuine parts but there's just no evidence of it.

There are hundreds of Passats out there for sale. If this one comes with a mystery then just move onto another one.

I'm looking for specific specs and this one ticks all those boxes. There's nothing else there at the moment. Price is right too.

But yes waiting is an option. Just interested to hear what others make of the above and what they would do.

How much warranty new would it have come with ? Bit strange that you wouldn't get VW to service it while under warranty

Is there a service book? Call the dealer that did the first the service to see if they have any record of it, highly unlikely the first owner only serviced it at 11k and never again

Very unlikely that someone shelled out all that money for a new car and left it unserviced for nearly three years and 88k.
