Issue with ownership transfer

Hey guys,

I bought a car in a private sale on the 22nd of January, log book signed and dated there and then. The seller then said he posted off the log book on the 25th, and I have been refreshing the motortax website ever since and still no update on the transfer.

I have been messaging the seller since the week after the sale and giving it time just in case there has been a delay in Shannon with all the new car registrations.

But it's been 3 weeks now and I am nowhere, the seller says that he is calling them, but then not updating me on what they are telling him.

I'm assuming that the next step would be for the seller to go and request a replacement log book if it was lost in the post and refill out my details and send it off again.

Other than that, is there anything I can do? Can I force through a ownership transfer? I took photos of the log book signed and dated by both of us.

Had the same happen to me a couple of years ago. Seller would not respond after a while. Said he had sent it to Shannon.

Ended up having to get a form (would be helpful if I could remember the name of it) and get a section filled out by a motor dealer to confirm the VIN number and then get it signed by a solicitor. A bit of a pain. Solicitor charged 10 euro.

Had a look back through emails. The form is just called 'Declaration by person acquiring motor vehicle'

You will find it if you google that.

Thanks, he said that they have received the transfer request and posted out the logbook today. But still hasn't been updated on the website and their phone lines are closed.

I'll keep my eye on the site and call tomorrow and see what they say if it hasn't been updated.

I emailed Shannon last week and got this reply today, "The Vehicle Registration Certificate (VRC) was received in this office for change of ownership on 8/2/23.          A request for further information was issued to you from this office on 8/2/23        You should receive the letter in the next few days."

Anyone have any sort of idea why they would be needing additional information?

Not heard of this before, is there a chance it's a car for which VRT exemption was given and car is being sold within a year of this?

I have no idea, the seller I bought it from said that he bought it as a private sale too.

They send the additional info form when you put the incorrect date on the logbook. Any chance you’s wrote 2023 instead of 2024?

No, just went back and looked at the photo I took when I signed it and it's 220124.

Can I put the 1st of Feb on it now, so I can avoid paying January? 😂😂😂😂
