Questions about scrapping a car, possibly with carTakeback.ie

I have a 08 Astra H Estate (1.3 diesel) with nearly 300k miles on that no longer runs ( It starts, but immediately dies) The mechanic reckons its probably an injector. It's probably fixable, but the car is 16 years old, lots of miles, some things are rusting (passenger door hinge for example) and has not been driving particularly well for the last 2 years, I think its time to say goodbye to it. (11 Years driving for €6k, we had a good run!)

I do not have the means of bringing the car anywhere so I got a quote off cartakeback.ie and they are offering €300 and they'll collected it from the house here, which doesn't seem bad to me considering. I assume this is the best option for me considering my lack of ability to move the car and I assume its not worth trying to sell on donedeal

I've done a search on here and it seems like some people have used them without an issue.

I'm a bit confused about the process of it though. As I said I got the quote, all i needed to enter was reg and eircode. But in the FAQ they say they ask questions about mileage and if it runs and that will adjust the price, but I've never been asked anything or had the option of entering more info.

The other thing that confuses me is you give them the car and they either send you a certification of destruction or if they don't you need to let DoT know, seems like a weird setup? I would have thought it would be up to them to let me know if they car is to be repaired or not

"As long as you receive a Certificate of Destruction, there’s no need for you to contact the Department of Transport in Shannon.

However, if your car is to be repaired and returned to the road it’s your responsibility to notify the Department of Transport using form RF105."

Cheers if anyone can share any info around this stuff!

If they won't guarantee giving you a cert of destruction post the VLC to Shannon with them as the new owners. Then it's their problem.

I used them recently and was very happy. 15 years old car. Was still running but head gasket was on way out. They came and collected car and I got cert of destruction in the post 3 days later

I used them about 3 years ago as the flywheel went in my car leaving it immobile.

If you proceed to the next step and register, I think there are more options about whether the car is driving and the mileage etc. Didn't change my price at the time.

I had to hand over the log book/change of ownership form when the car was collected which was detailed in an email. Driver at the time mentioned that many people don't have it at collection time or reluctant to hand it over.

I got my cert of destruction shortly after.

    Just to complete this circle

Used CarTakeback last week and they collected it this week.

Proceeded online and it was passed onto Hammond lane in Athlone, which would be my local scrap yard, Maybe I could have gotten more if I went directly with them, didn't think I'd get them to collect though as I live 20/30 miles away.

The fella rang to organize a day for collection, he did ask if the car was running but I felt he was asking for more logistical reasons than the state of the car, because he asked will a truck be able to get it after that and once I said it was on a driveway he said it was grand. He didn't ask any quesitons about mileage or general condition.

The guy who came to collect it just give a quick look under the bonnet (I assume to check it still had its main parts), put it on the truck, I signed the log book and whatever form he had and gave me €300 cash in an envelope.

Don't know if its true or not, but he was saying scrap yards were being incentivized to give larger pay outs on older ICE cars to take them off the road. A breaker could probably make a few hundred euro of my car selling it for parts, but I doubt its worth paying me €300 to them, so maybe there is truth in it.

Certificate of destruction came 2 days later. Overall, very happy with the service/process

Not sure going direct would have been better. When I contacted a scrap yard near me about collecting a car they said that the scrap value would be used to cover the collection cost, so I'd get nothing. Went with CarTakeback as they offered collection and some money. At the time the catalytic converter on the car probably would have covered most of what they offered, but was still better than nothing.
