How does a vintage car work?

Have a 00 Corolla that is going well. Thinking of upgrading to something more comfortable but want to keep onto the Corolla.

Think she will be 25 years old next year so was hoping to keep her as vintage.

So my Corolla tax is around 400 and 600 for insurance . What roughly would this be if keeping as a second vintage car.

Ah thanks for clarifying. I thought it was 25 for some reason. So if I wanted to keep onto the Corolla I would just park her up in a garage and hold on to her until she is 30.

I don't want to let her go as sails through Nct each year and a grand car to spin about town. looking at a 152 mazda 2 for around 8000.

Some insurance companies will insure certain cars of 20 years or older on a vintage policy. However I don't think a Corolla would be one of those models.

You wont get classic tax until it hits 30, insurance varies from car to car but it will be cheaper than the usual.

Some insurance companies won't insurance "mass produced" cars as classic. You could contact FirstIteland and see what they say.

When the car hits 30 years old, tax turns to €56. Until then, it's full price unfortunately

The insurance companies steer clear of run of the mill cars under 30 as classic insurance cars especially the like of corollas and starlets. Perfect everyday cars. Too much risk people will use them for commuting.

I will be trying to insure a 99 Megane as a classic with AXA this year - 25 years old is their stipulation although I don't know if they have a ridiculous "no mass produced cars" rule like First Ireland do.

This is what First Ireland say:

"The Vehicle MUST NOT:

be mass produced. (Car types such as a Fiat Punto do not qualify under our classic car scheme)"

Very vague description.

Is an MX5 or TT or SLK mass produced? I'm guessing they are,I'm not sure what would fit the bill of not being mass produced.

They're a broker though, so it suggests that they have obviously had push back from alot of companies so just say it up front now, to save themselves time

The first Irish reg Puntos turn 30 this year, given their one time status as the best selling car in Ireland and their almost absence from the road, certainly the first gen, I would have thought they're every bit as classic as a mk1 or mk2 Escort beck in the day.

Like a lot of things, classic cars insurance is a movable feast with vested interests bullsh*tiing and suiting themselves. So we get "classic car insurance" - but no mass produced vehicles which excludes 99.99% of cars ever made if the insurer applies that. And "no Puntos".

I suppose competence of cars like the Mk1 Punto, regardless of how rare they now are, goes against it. in 1994 a 30 year old car was something like an Austin 1100 or a Mk1 Cortina. Not very usable in 1994. Whereas a 94 Punto is very usable in 2024.

Oh I get it but it doesn't mean it's not a load of bollocks. The Punto is actually a remarkable car for 1994, it moved the supermini sector significant forward which if anything should add to it's classic cred as it hits 30 and is getting very scarce.
