My partner and I are planning to move to Galway in the next year. We have a two year old so we're trying to find somewhere family friendly. We're looking both in Galway city and outside (mostly on the east side). We're very interested in Renmore and Mervue if anyone has any areas there that they think are particularly nice. It would also be great to get recommendations for creches and schools in those areas so we could check them out. We're open to other areas too if anyone has any other recommendations. Much appreciated!

The rule of thumb in Galway is you live on the same side of town that you work on.

With creches, especially on the East side, you have waiting lists. Can be up to 18 months long depending on the crèche. You'd need to have a name down for school also around the child's current age, again places fill up fast and you don't wanna get left with the less desirable schools.

That's not really the way anymore, thankfully.

It was our experience getting our first into the school we wanted and our seconds name is going down now, 2 years in advance. Schools fill up, they don't take infinite numbers.

It's no longer a first come first served basis where they reach capacity years in advance. The admission system has been changed.

Schools can only accept applications from the year before you start and it is a set date on their admissions notice. Any in breach of this are in big trouble. Now I are competing with brothers/sisters/ mam/da in school clauses and feeder schools but if new and in feeder you have same chance as someone there generations assuming they never had someone in the school.
