Paint colour

    Hi all,

I recently got a rear bumper resprayed. The colour is slightly darker than the rest of the car.

I was told it would change in a few days due to the clear coat of a previous respray. Sounds like a tall tale and nonsense to me but I thought I’d ask first if this is not uncommon?

    Thanks

How old is the car? Fresh paint and 10 year old paint is never going to be identical. As the new paint ages it wont stick out as much.

I agree with Whocare.Want to be some sunshine or whatever to fade in a few days

True although I would have thought for an old car they should never have sprayed it using the paint code on the car they should have used the scan tool to determine the best colour match which would have changed with age?

Any decent paint shop should have one of them..

So how old is the car? And how much did you pay?

10 years old, red VW car is in very good condition paint wise. I had touch up work done before and it matched 99.% at the same place.

Red in an incredibly hard colour to match as it fades the worst, if you want it to match you need to get the whole rest of the car cut/polished to refresh the old panels to match the new paint job

The odd thing is the rest of the car looks more reddish and brighter. The respray is a tone darker.

Would I be wasting my time to polish bumper and wax the bumper.

In fairness they did get the colour from the vin/codes on the car.

Did you leave the bumper to be painted separate from the rest of the car? Paint matching is done by blowing in the paint to the next panels in order to gradually fade out and not draw the eye to the new painted panel. It’s more expensive to do but a far better result. If the car is older than a couple of years there is a chance of a slight colour change and the only way to match is by eye or a decent paint shop with a spectrometer will give a perfect match. Silver is horrible to match. Red fades and a lot of lacquer on red cars act up also. Also - paint results on plastic is a lot different than on metal. Sometimes it can look entirely different.

It’s absolutely not going to magically change shade in a few days, no.

Thanks for the feedback lads. It was the full bumper only, it wasn’t blended in just to the joints of the bumper to the main body.

I should paint it orange and bring it back, saying it changed colour alright just too much. He’ll be scratching his head then.

    thanks anyway lads
