New TV for narrow room

One of our TVs has given up the ghost, few strips of dead pixels and blurred lines running horizontally.

It's a 46" Samsung either LE46A656 or LE46A659

I'm a sucker for Philips Hue so was looking at an ambilight TV.

The room is narrow so the TV is only about 7 feet away. There seems to be mainly 42" and 50". No one wants to go smaller with a new TV but I'm not sure 50" might be too big at that distance.

Any recommendations in the sub 1k euro range?

Would consider another brand too

I don't think 50" would be too large at 7 feet away. I've a 55" and sit not much further away than 7ft.

Hi there, thanks for that. Can you expalin the difference between the 50" and 48" at the bottom of your list?

Do you take back old TVs or how does that work with delivery?

Hi Alkers.

The 48" is an OLED which gives a much better image, contrast and just in general a superior television.

The 50" is a standard LED panel.

In terms of picture quality, OLED TVs beat LED TVs hands down. OLED is also lighter and thinner, uses less energy, offers the best viewing angle by far, and, though still a little more expensive, has come down in price considerably from when first released.

Once you see the quality of an OLED panel its hard to go back to LED.

We can arrange to collect old televisions and have them disposed of. We would book this with the delivery and when the courier is dropping of the new TV they would take away the old one. It would need to be sitting ready for them at your front door as they are unable to wait around if it was not disconnected. We would of course let you know which day this would take place.

We are back and ready to buy!

See the OLED Philips 48" is down to 1349.

Talking to friends, they're dismissing the ambilight as a gimmick (I like it though) and recommending LG as a brand.

If we are pushing the budget to go OLED, would you go with the Philips or recommend another brand at a similar price point up to 50"?

Have taken down the old TV and existing mount is VESA 100 x 100 - 600 x 500mm so would like to get something that is directly compatible rather than having to get a new mount

The Philips OLEDs are amazing - I really like the Ambilight as well, I think it adds to the image especially against a neutrally coloured wall. They also have great smart hubs and processors so they're a great OLED to go for.

On the VESA mounting - if the range is definitely 100 x 100 to 600 x 500 then your mount should work as the Philips has a VESA pattern of 300 x 300. The wright is also 14kg so the mount needs to be able to support that weight as well.
