I have an 08 Suzuki Grand Vitara 2.0l petrol.

Oil pump failed and it seized.

I cannot find anyone who can replace the engine, or rebuild the block. I have found a suitable rebuild kit, and a reputable company to do any machining needed.

But nobody seems to want to do either (find and fit replacement) or remove, dismantle engine( I can transfer parts to machinist and back) and rebuild it.

Any advice appreciated because I've been trying for 3 weeks and am no further along.

    Thank you.

I think your problem maybe that most mechanics probably don't want to take the job on and have the luxury of picking and choosing their work. Mechanics are is short supply and many have plenty of work and so busy they are only dealing with regular customers so the notion of rebuilding or replacing an engine on a 16 year old Grand Vitara would really be bottom of their priority list imo.

Can you source a good engine with everything attached. Quickest solution would be completed in a few hrs.

Even if you actually managed to find someone I think that's approaching beyond economic repair if you're paying someone to do it, I only see a handful of 1.6 petrols on DD for around 2K and given labour prices now I think you'd be near enough there all in.

It might be worth considering putting that money towards another vehicle.

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

OP I would be inclined to consider the car a write off at this stage. 16 years old needing a rebuilt engine I mean unless you have a specific attachment I’d be looking to get a new car.

    No.

Tried Part Finder, Find a Part and the Treanor group.

    They were not popular.

An engine change is about 800-1200.

Identical car on donedeal is 4.5-5.5k

    If I can find one.

1.6 is a two seater with occasional 4.

The grand is a comfortable 5 seater and exceptionally good for the occasional towing and off roading that I do.

Sadly it's looking like I have to move on.

Are people really buying 16 year old ones for 4.5k to 5.5k? Seems nutty money to me.

OP where are you even getting that figure from? No one is paying anything close to that amount for a 16 year old Grand Vitara.

Your car was worth about 2k before it needed a new engine. Its a write off.

Maybe for diesels at a big stretch, petrols of that era would generally be worth less.

Dearest I can see on DD now is some optimist asking for 5k for an 05 diesel with 300k on it!

If you were willing to switch to a diesel there are a few 'reasonable' ones there around 3k but slim pickings as you say.

Longford, I presume you have checked Engine Spares in Lanesborough. Unusual if they wouldn't rebuild it.

mechanics and garages now are all up to their eyes with work as I understand. They can be a lot more pick and choose and lots won’t touch a fiddly job.

had asked a few about fixing interior door handles on a Qashqai but no one was bothered it takes too long and it’s hassle. Next please. 🤣

This is not a mechanic, this is a specialist engine rebuild company.

I rebuilt an audi 1 8t there last year. Did it myself bar getting the head rebuilt at an engine shop.

It's really not cost effective to go about rebuilding your engine in such a low value car unless you can do it yourself and after oil pump failure, its possibly scrap anyway.

    As above.

He will do the machining, but is obligated ATM to the point he won't disassemble or reassemble outside contract work, as he has no time.

They do great work but in my experience they generally won't take full vehicles in or even fully assembled engines these days they're that busy, you have to give them just the parts that need work.
