My dad is with sky at the moment. He has no broadband.

What stellitte receiver would be good for him - one that would be easy to use and be able to use with existing satellite dish.

A record option would be a plus

Is it possible the existing tv has a satellite tuner, does he have an aerial for SaorView.

You need to get him a combo box, that will allow simple operation of terrestrial tv stations (RTE etc) and other stations, most notability UK (BBC, etc..). Simply go up and down using + or - on the remote for all stations.

Something like below would be perfect. You will need to program it to search for stations and delete unwanted stations, of which there will be many...

    hope this helps!

You should be able to get this or other combo boxes with a pre programmed list to make it easier to set up.

As decor58 said the TV could have a satellite tuner which the cable from the dish can be plugged into. Depending on what sort of Sky he has the dish might work and give pictures without any box needed. If it does, spend a bit of time working out the menus and seeing how easy it is for him to use. But apparently some versions of Sky use a special LNB (the bit which sticks out from the dish) which will be no good on the TV. And no good on a non Sky box either.

The TV will have a terrestrial tuner which connects to an aerial for RTE and other Irish stations. He would have been paying Sky to get RTE on the dish, so if he has no aerial he will have no RTE. Recording from the TV may be possible using a USB. Modern TV's have USB ports.

There is an Ariel.that hasn't been in use for years.

The TV doesn't have a satalite tuner.

    Many thanks for the information
