When to trim beard and suitable appliance

Hi, I'm experimenting with my first beard - I'm three weeks now. When should my beard be trimmed - I don't want a big beard - just neat stubble. Should I leave it to my barber? If not, any recommendations for appliances are best for trimming beards. Thank you.

YouTube is a good resource. If you have some hair clippers you should be able to use those with a guard.
