    Hi,

Can you pickup points or a fine (or both) in the UK when driving a car with an Irish registration?

    Asking for a friend... :-)

    You can't get automated ones.

You can be pulled over and fined.

there is a thing called a ghost licence. if the driver switches their licence from an irish to a british version then the points are added at the outset, however note the points are quashed after 3 years.

of course you would need to be pulled over for your details to be taken for a ghost licence to be created and subsequently fined.

Thanks... I wasn't renting a car... but why / how would an Irish registered rental car end up with the fine, whereas a private Irish registered car wouldn't?

The rental car is owned and registered in the UK. The ower(rental company) will have to pay the fine. They will then charge the customer for this fine. I'm sure it's all covered in the rental agreement.
