Car rental via Aer Lingus

I booked a flight to LHR with Aer Lingus and was offered car hire as part of the process. The cheapest option was from AVIS for €76 for 4 days (crappy mini size car, but good enough for what I want)

When i look to book directly with AVIS or Hertz the price is ~€30 more, so it seems a no brainer

The only thing that bothers me is that when I tried to do something similar last year on a trip to Majorca with Ryan Air, I was warned against using any of their car hire "partners" as advertised prices were hiked up on arrival (albeit that would be with non household name car rental companies)

This AVIS hire is "pay on the day", but I don't want to arrive, find about €100 of surcharges added on and no option to go elsewhere at the last minute

If anyone has rented cars via Aer Lingus and can advise, I would be grateful

I assume the extras charged are down to the car hire being booked with basic insurance but you can protect yourself by taking car hire excess in advance.

I'm not aware of car hire companies loading up on people who book through an airline.

Maybe book through Air Lingus but get it from one of the more reputable and international car hire companies rather than a local one to the area you're holidaying in, chances are Aer Lingus won't have them on their site anyway.
