    Hi

I have a free standing wood burning stove, and have a piano close to it (see photo). I want to put a board against the end of the piano to protect it from the heat of the stove. What type of board would you recommend?

Cementboard. Leave a gap for air circulation between it and the piano.

    Won't be pretty.

Thanks for that - as an alternative to cement board, would this work, do you think? https://www.vitcas.com/prd/decorative-fireplace-boards

That's a fireboard, it's a substance which is designed to trap and release heat and may be made from a dusty or friable material and may not be hard-wearing and may break around the edges over time. I don't think it would be easy to get it to match your decor. Maybe either this or cement board could be used if it was mounted into a frame with some wide legs, or another option may be just to use an old style fire-screen made from wire-mesh?

Would a wire mesh screen actually block the heat though?

It does block some radiated heat. It's not a full block, but may be sufficient.

I don't think it would be possible to cut the ceramic, whereas the cement board can be cut to shape (dust mask essential).

A fine metal mesh will reduce radiated heat. Also requires an air gap.

Is there anywhere else you can put the piano? Does anyone play it?

It's going to be slipping out of tune all the time if it's subjected to the temperature changes it's likely to get that near a stove.

There's nowhere else. We've had it there a few years, with a sheet of "tile backer board" against it & that seemed to work OK. It recently got broken and I wanted to replace it with something more appropriate if possible.

I am tone deaf myself, but I have a wife, daughter and a hundred in laws who would all let me know very quickly if it was out of tune :)

I think the tile backer board might work but a nicer solution would be to make up a frame into which the backer board or insulation material could be incorporated. I've seen decorative firescreens, used to mask fires when they are unlit, you can buy the brass feet and get a screen/ frame made up to suit. Turn it into a decorative item, using something in the room (colour, wall paper/ upholstery or curtain fabric design) as a design cue.

I'd consider a sheet of plywood with a sheet of plasterboard stuck to it then cut it to a suitable shape prime and paint plasterboard side facing the stove. If you really wanted to you could tile the plasterboard side.

Wake me up when it's all over.
