What would typically be the cause of brake imbalance?

    Failed the NCT last week on brake imbalance in the rear axle. Brake effort on the nearside is 1,790 kN and it was 2,770 kN on the offside. The NCT people gave the '2,770' number a swipe of a green highlighter pen, as they did the imbalance number of '34%'. The limit for both axles is 30%. The front axle number was 1% (3,820 & 3,770) so virtually no imbalance at all.

    Any suggestions as to the possible cause? The pads are relatively new so I'm wondering if it's the discs. I'd like to figure out what's causing it so I can have an estimate in my head as to how much it's going to cost to fix.

    What car is it?

    If it is a car using pads and discs for the handbrake i would be starting with handbrake cable adjustment as the first thing to eliminate as a problem.

    Nearside caliper just needs to be bled I'd say.

    If there's air in it it will reduce the braking force applied.

    Ideally you need a garage with equipment to measure brake imbalance. Typically it's something in the brakes on one side or the other, if it's rear handbrake cable may be the issue, if they are disc or drum brakes something may be sticking or brakes may need to be bled. Brake pads or drums may be worn or heat damaged etc.
