Looking for advice I'm currently driving an automatic but am reverting to a manual as have kids 18, 17 and 15 who will need to learn to drive. It will be the 2nd car in the house.

I'm currently doing about 25k miles a year so looking for a mid size diesel. I've it narrowed down to 2:

VW golf 2019 1.6 match with 72k miles on the clock which will cost 4k with my own or

VW Passat 2018 1.6 se bluemotion with 98k miles on clock will cost 2.5k with my own

Anyone an opinion on which would be the better buy as regards running costs, resale value.

Or anything else I need to consider?

    Thanks

Learning to drive in a Passat can be discouraging it’s a big sluggish car especially with 1.6 engine. Golf all the way for handling, visibility and being more agile. Good luck teaching kids to drive!

Resale value golf all the way, assuming you don't pay over the odds for either car.

Learning to drive golf all the way.

Running costs, golf by a whisker once everything continues to work in both cars but that's a lottery depending on which car ends up most reliable.

I wouldn't necessarily be buying a manual just to let your kids learn in it... EVs are all automatic, all the manufacturers have a range of automatic's now and manual is dying out.

I'd be more inclined to let them learn in your current car (depending on what it is, insuring them on it etc) and getting used to driving and observation than learning ther mechanics of a driving method that's going away anyway.

Yes I had considered that but I'm in a village with no off street parking so between not being able to charge at home and very poor charging infrastructure an EV not practical for me yet.

Current car has high brake horse power so expensive to insure them on and tbh a bit too powerful for a learner.

Octavia might be a nice middle ground between the two. Mechanically the same but more spacious than the Goof but not as bulky as the Passat.
