Very impressive by Kerr. The gauntlet has been laid down to Jakob now, very much a role reversal. Wightman clearly still has work to do. I wonder will all three choose to run the Euros.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,538 ✭✭✭Hamachi

Mawdsley really is in great form. Hope she can maintain through the Europeans and Olympics.

Kelly McGrory stepping up like that, is exactly what the relay squad needs. Great PB, but we need her or one of the other girls like Harrison or Cadden to get down closer to 52 flat or better still 51.xx to really augment the relay squad and hopefully get us into that final. Great run from her all the same.

Insanely strong running by Kerr. Massive PB at mile. Kinda low 3:28 territory that.

Commentary mentioning Jakob not 100 percent fit? 3:45.6 is insanely quick for a mile. What, unless he’s sub 3:44 that means he’s not 100 percent fit, whatever 100 percent fit actually means..

Did we get 1500 split time for Josh?

I thought the exact thing about Hodgkinson, amazing athlete and looking favorite in August, crossing the line she was pumped. Kerr is in great form and Jakob is not in the right frame of mind yet with the father thing and the injury. If Jakob can deal with the demons and Josh can stay on form it will be one of the best finals of the Olympics. exciting.

Ciara Mageean, Sarah Healy, and Luke McCann on the start lists for the 1500m tomorrow evening in Ostrava.

Mawdsley was also initially announced for the 400m but is no longer listed. She’s been racing a lot lately. Hopefully, it’s just to focus on the European championships and she hasn’t picked up a niggle.

Mawdsley pulled out at the weekend and ran a 100m and 200m in Belgium since so seems to be a schedule thing rather than a knock

Becker got the call up for it instead so some good news there

The GB Euro team was announced. Some big names missing it (Laura Muir, Kerr, Wightman, no 4x400 women relay) but Hodgkinson is doing it

  • Registered Users Posts: 16,156 ✭✭✭✭Pherekydes

Mageean and Healy 1 and 2 in Ostrava. Mageean had to work hard for the win. 4:01.98 to 4:02.12

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,232 ✭✭✭✭Dodge

And our first euro selections have been made. Rhasidat, Sharlene and Sophie all in for the 400m. Phil going there for the relays

Mageean and Healy both doing the 1,500m

Looks like Cillin Greene, Kate O’Connor and Fionnuala McCormack are the only 3 that said no.

Could be our biggest medal haul with a bit of luck

That was a fantastic run by Healy and looked like she would win 200m to 100m out. Mageean seemed knackered but somehow pulled a win out of the fire.

I think Sarah watched Ciara too much. She could have won that one. She needs to believe in herself more.

Yeah. It did look that way. She should have more self-confidence. She’s a sub 4 athlete herself. Very cool to see an Irish 1-2.

Luke McCann also ran very well. A new 3.34.32 PB which is a Euro qualifier and less than a second outside the Olympic qualification standard. He might yet nail it.

Another sub-52 run for Sophie Becker. Placing wasn’t great, but she has definitely reached a new level this year. Would be great to see her get close to her PB in Rome.

  • Registered Users Posts: 18,390 ✭✭✭✭Strazdas

Yes, that's a fair point. If anything, she was a bit too cautious after hitting the front and should have really gone for it -Mageean might not have been able to catch her if she'd had a slightly bigger lead.

Just saw the race, brilliant run by the Irish girls..I had heard the Irish had a 1,2...but I couldn't believe where Ciara came from !!

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,538 ✭✭✭Hamachi

Yeah. Great finish. She looked a bit fatigued until the final 200m. I guess it’s a testament to her fitness that she was able to pull it out of the bag.

12:36 5000 metres in Oslo tonight. Hagos Gebrhiwet

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,538 ✭✭✭Hamachi

Mark English with 1.44.95 to finish fourth over 800m in Oslo last night. Looks like he’s rounding into decent form for Rome.

Coscoran ran 3:32 in the 1500m. New SB finishing tenth in a stellar field.

In the women’s 400m, Poland’s Natalia Kaczmarek ran 49.80 to finish second. She will likely be the biggest threat to Rhasidat Adeleke in Rome. Lieke Klaver ran 50.62 in her season opener, just marginally faster than Mawdsley’s new PB.

Stockholm Diamond League on Virgin Media 2 at 5pm..

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,538 ✭✭✭Hamachi

Two Irish in action. Great run by Luke McCann finishing second in the 1500m. He ran a new PB of 3.33, just outside the auto Q for the Olympics. Shame that he doesn’t appear to be running in the Euros.

Sophie Becker was third in the 400m. 52.17. I’m a bit concerned that her races have been progressively slower since the Belfast PB. Hopefully, she’s building towards a peak in Rome.

Femke Bol opened her season with 53.07. She was asleep at the start. Not sure what happened there. Mondo Duplantis has three very close attempts at the WR. It will surely come soon.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,538 ✭✭✭Hamachi

Another noteworthy Irish result this weekend. Lauren Cadden ran 52.87 over 400m in Salamanca. That’s an almost 0.5 second PB for her and of course adds further depth to the relay squad. This is is her first year running the 400m, so definitely a prospect.

Bit of an underwhelming start for Bol by her incredible standards. Assuming there'll be a lot more to come from her soon.

Shericka Jackson got the win but the time not great, she doesn't look quite right this year. Hopefully she'll be able to right the ship before Paris.

Sedjati with another win. He's certainly raising some eyebrows at the moment, particularly after his final 200m in Ostrava.

By ‘raising some eyebrows’, do you mean for the caliber of his performances or for shall we say, more nefarious reasons?

Bol was disappointing for sure. It’s a long way to Paris though.

  • Registered Users Posts: 16,156 ✭✭✭✭Pherekydes

Bol was disappointing? She had her fastest opener.

There's been a lot of controversy over the selection of women representing Australia in the Women's marathon in Paris, with 6 having run below the QT. In the end the 1st (Sinead Diver), 2nd & 5th quickest over the distance (albeit in different races) are going. Very tough on the lady who ran the 3rd fastest time (Lisa Weightman). Definitely adds an argument for having an Olympics trial event… Oh to have such problems as having 6 ladies at that level.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,760 ✭✭✭ReeReeG

And (according to the internet) this is the 3rd time Weightman has missed out on selection apparently.

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,232 ✭✭✭✭Dodge

Weightman is her 40s like Diver. She made the Aussie Olympic team for the last four games though.

I’m not suggesting she hasn’t a case for Paris, but she hasn’t been excluded before (at Olympic level)

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,760 ✭✭✭ReeReeG

Ah ok, must have been a claim about other championships so.

Any idea if Virgin or Rte are televising the European Championships? BBC are only showing it online and through their app which I’m not sure if we can access it here.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,854 ✭✭✭deisedude

It's on RTE2. Saw it listed on the Sky planner for next weekend

  • Registered Users Posts: 164 ✭✭poppy37

    That’s great, thanks for that.

Six year ban for Rhonex Kipruto, won't be allowed back until 2028 and loses both his 10k road world record and 10,000m bronze from Doha 2019.
