Turn off water

Hi guys,

Hope ya can help..

Looking to turn off water but cannot find the thing..

I definitely was able to turn off water before with a twisty thing, Had pyrite done last year and only looking to turn off water now, but its not the same...

I assume its this, but theirs no lever on it to turn? Can ya just buy one of these and screw it in at the end where their is a hole?

You can buy the knobs but most people just clip a pair of mole grips on the end and turn it that way.

Thanks, Thought I could do that, didnt want to mess around too much as its water. Handy to have the knob in case of emergency..

Whats the knob called, can ya get it on screwfix for example..?

Know how to stop the water coming to that valve in case it breaks. I'm suspicious of why such an important valve had wheel removed.

The pipe comes from underground from what I can see, and ya can see in the photo, dont think you can stop the water going there, unless you can tell me how?

As to why it was removed, the pyrite guys did loadsa things you wouldnt believe... dont know how many times I had to get them back at the start to fix stupid little things..

Only realising this now and is over a year so wudnt be able to get them back to fix this!

There'll be a stopcock near where this underground pipe enters the property.

Black pipe coming directly up looks like that is where this underground pipe enters the property.

Buy the cheapest tap you can find on Screwfix or in Woodies/B&Q which has a screw holding the tap handle on, take it off and attempt to screw into that tap spindle with the square top. Should (hopefully) fit snug and be ready for if/when you need to turn the water off in an emergency...but I'd question why the tap handle was removed in the first place.

Enters the building, not where it enters the property. I'm assuming it's an IW/scheme supply. If private well its even simpler.

Or a water meter, makes it even easier to turn off the mains water.

I'd put some 3in1 oil on that spindle before attempting to turn it otherwise it could shear off leaving you in all sorts of trouble.

Spray it with oil first a few times. Get a medium sized adjustable spanner not a vice grips or an adjustable wrench. And use that to open it. You may be all year trying to match that stopcock to something current.

Leave the adjustable spanner in beside it so it's always there. They're not expensive.
