Windows 10 x64 - black screen on bootup after System Restore

I updated software (X-Rite iProfiler) to discover that the update wouldn't support the i1 Profiler device that I use to profile my monitor. (X-Rite have ended support of some devices using this software, up to the last update.)

So, I did a system restore to a point one hour before.

I then profiled my monitor and restarted the computer.

It rebooted to a black screen (no mouse cursor) and keeps doing so.

I can access BIOS via F2, but I don't know what I might do there.

    Any help appreciated.

    Thanks.

    D.

Ps. Should have added above that I'm getting an A9 error on the ASUS MB.

Also, I had updated the GPU driver. But. the monitor did work for me to profile it before the reboot.

A9 means it's entered the BIOS, it's not really an error, just the status.

But there's nothing in the BIOS that will impact this, this is a Windows level issue.

I'd suggest booting into safe mode and removing/disabling iProfiler to get a display back in the short term. You can try reinstalling it afterwards.

    Thanks.

Rebooting in safe mode using F4 or F5 isn't working.

I can access BIOS during startup via F2. Can I then boot in safe mode from there?

    No, that's not possible either.

Doe the Windows install make any attempt to boot? Does it even manage to show the logo?

It has just gone to Windows repair mode. (Don't know why it did!) I have the following options.

    1. Continue (to Windows 10)
    2. Use a device
    3. Trouble shoot
    4. Turn off PC.

    Which should I choose?

    Thanks.

After three failed starts, it does so automatically.

Under troubleshoot, there's advanced options, and under there is safe mode.

    Under Advanced I see.......

    Start-up Repair

    Start-up Settings

    Command Prompt

    Uninstall Updates

    UEFI Firmware Settings

    System Restore

    System Image Recovery

    I don't see Safe Mode.

    Thanks.

If it's that version, then start up settings should have it.

I found Safe Mode via Start-Up Settings, and I engaged it. But, it's still starting with a blank screen, so I can't do anything.

I can only get a usable screen if I choose Start Up Repair, Uninstall Updates or System Restore.

I then get a screen with my account name.

When I click on it, I am asked for a password. It says it's incorrect and the only option is to Restart "...to try signing in to Windows to manage user accounts." But, as I can't do that coz I get a blank screen. Stumped. (I do have a second computer that I'm typing this on, if that can help.)

    Oh, dear.

Reinstalling Windows from a USB boot disk seems to have fixed it.

    Thanks.
