I had parked up my car for nearly a year and went to start it this week and turned on the igntion and lights came on and it just clicked. I took it out brought it into work and cahrged the bty for bout 4 hrs.

Came home put battery in now it was a bit hot after being on charge. Anyway put battery in and put key in ignition no lights on dash and wasnt cranking over. Checked continuity on fuses in engine bay and inside car. Checked relays also. Tried to jump it off another car. Used jump leads on other car bty to bty terminals and still no power. Checked the earths and still no power

Got new battery and still no power.

Wondering am i after damagin ecu in car . Could it be ignition switch or starter motor issue ?

Car is a 2012 skoda octavia 2.0 TDI

    Any help much appreciated ?

When you say no power if you switch on the full lights on the car do they come on with the new battery? Have you double checked the connections are on fully secure, check there's no corrosion on the connections from the car to the battery terminals.

Lights on and ticking noise before you charged battery (usual signs of low voltage) then nothing after you charged the battery which got hot...

Battery should not get hot when charging. I would be afraid something went wrong during charging or when you reinstalled it.

Are you sure you have the polarity correctly orientated.

Is there a secondary fuse box somewhere in those cars? I had a car once where fuses were under the bonnet and also inside the car. Might be worth a look in the owner's manual.

Yes polarity is correct. No lights with new battery.

I have the car with a mechanic now so we will see if he can fix it.

I'll put 50 cent on a fuse(relay). Although there's good odds on a bad earth.

We checked every fuse for continuity and voltage at engine bay and in the car at the drivers side. Connect a negative from neg battery terminal to an earth on the chassis and no power still . Then we put power to the relays with a wire from battery energising the coil and it was clicking. I personally think an open circuit from battery to starter or the ignition switch is melted.

If the battery was overcharged would that do damage to the car when it was reconnected ?? Would it damage ecu or melt wires or damage starter/ignition.

Its a mystery as to what happened

Car is fixed. It was an electrical prob. The mechanic said he had to get another mechanic who is good at electrics . He said there was some electrical part/wires under the fusebox that got damaged but didnt say what it was. Maybe it was an ecu or something i dont know but is fixed now.

Why so vague, could mean anything. What part failed, why, how? I know it's fixed and that's what matters and hopefully wasn't too expensive but I'd still be curious about the diagnosis.

Yes was very vague. He said fuses were in wrong place and some were missing also which wasnt an issue before. Battery was very old too so that could of done damage. It shall remain a mystery . Its fixed now .

Treat them like mushrooms and charge an arm and a leg.
