Low water pressure after toilet was left running

    Hi all,

I'm on a well and noticed a significant drop in pressure this evening. Turns out a toilet flapper hadn't closed fully after being flushed this morning so it was running all day. The attic tank was empty and any water getting into it from the well was going into the cistern and straight out again. I sorted the toilet out and the attic tank has refilled and I've not used any water for 3 hours now but the pressure coming out of the kitchen tap isn't more than a trickle.

This happened before when a hose was left running but it wasn't such a long period of time and pressure was restored about an hour after we turned it off.

Any time we lose power we get no water to the tap at all so the pump is still working to a degree. Before I call the well service people is there anything I can do or check? The only thing I can really see in the pump house is the expansion tank pressure gauge which is holding steady at around 30psi which is normal. Otherwise the pump has power and the overload lockout switch hasn't popped.

    Would really appreciate any advice.

You need to check the cut in and cut out pressure at your pump. Also note how long it takes from cut in to cut out, with water off at pump outlet.

You might have a partially blocked pressure port.

    Thanks for the quick reply.

I just went out and cut power to the well for 5 minutes and when I came back in I had regular pressure for a bit but it has dropped again. After googling some of what you said I think I'll just call in the pros. I can't see a valve or hose connection near the expansion tank to drain it and the pump is underground so I don't know how to check when it's cutting in and out. I inherited this system with the house so other than what's visible to me I've no idea what sort of system it is.

Your well water level might be low after pump working all day. Probably ok again in a day or two.
