Replace slate roof

I have a 130 year old house with the original slate roof.

I am repairing a section (approx a third) of the roof that has approx 1600 slates in total and three dormers on one side.

I assumed that i could keep most of the slates and replace the ones that are beyond repair.

Speaking to a roofer today he said that the the cost of replacing the 30-40% of the broken/unsuitable slates

would be more than fitting new slates on the entire roof.

He also said that the slates might only last 10-15 years doing it that way.

Quoted me €22k to replace roof with different tiles (cant remember the name off-hand)

I'd love to get opinions on whether it would be better to just replace unsuitable slates or replace entire section with new tiles?

Is there a specific type of tile that would look good compared to the other sections of the original roof?

    TIA

Is he replacing with tiles or slates?

I assume the slates are blue Bangor's, you could get a pallet of them to keep uniform.

Better chance the slates these days will last only last 15 years , I've thrutone slates curling already after 5!

Yes, they are blue bangor slates.

would you recommend replace all slates with new ones that would last longer?

    Any recommendations?

IMO replacing slates with cement tiles on a period house is architectural vandalism.

If they are original then obviously like for like replacement will last another 130 years.

It sounds like the roofer isn't great.

I'm no roofer but new ones ain't lasting as long as blue Bangor's.

What is the problem with the roof in the first place? Is it just slates slipping? Lead all need redone?

It's slower reusing the old ones but I'd expect any roofer worth his salt to at least do the front of the old house in blue Bangor's.

Is this some hero with a website or someone you know is mustard?
