Vent for unused fireplace

We recently removed our fireplace. But we wanted to keep the Chimney usable as we hope to someday put in a stove. So we put plasterboard about it with a round vent at the bottom for air circulation.

Now though, we are getting soot coming down though the vent. Is there a type of vent or filter we could use to stop this?
