Irish candidates for the European parliament

Other countries send heavyweight former senior cabinet ministers and retired prime ministers to the European parliament who have the experience and clout to make a difference in there, but here in Ireland, the FF/FG candidates tend to be either obscure backbench TDs who weren't smart enough for a Micky mouse junior ministry or a former GAA/Rose of Tralee type with no previous political experience. I think FF/FG should be asking big political beasts like Enda Kenny, Bertie Ahern, John Bruton and Mary McAleese to run for Europe.

I think there's a strong sentiment out there that Bertie also meets the criteria for national embarrassment.

The Commissioner has far more weight and power than any MEP. If you want influence then target that role. But far too often we get someone in the role who is happy to maintain the status quo.

Most decisions are hacked out behind the scenes in advance by various madarins and civil servants (think Sir Humphrey in Yes Prime Minister). The parliament is a talking shop and a bit of window dressing for the EU citizens. They rarely make any massive groundbreaking decisions.

von der Leyen's solo run on the Israel-Gaza conflict is an excellent example of how they operate. They do what they want until they are pulled up on it, which is rarely.
