Japanese sword legality

    Hi,

I understand there was legal reform about 17 years ago to crack down on cheap Japanese swords, which made Japanese swords illegal without a license. There is an exception for swords made before 1954, or made at any other time according to traditional methods of making swords by hand. Is there any convention on how to prove that a sword predates 1954 or is made by hand? Could you run into trouble importing a traditionally made-sword? Genuine Japanese swords always have strong paperwork, which is statutory in Japan, but this would presumably not be in English.
