for on one of the GAA threads. Great show so far - in depth analysis of the current state of the game with fresh, young, insightful analysis by recent players. It's quality. Interview with Paidi Clifford at the moment.

Won't be able to watch this but looking forward to catching up with it. Wooly as a person is a bit of a dose but his podcast is very good, one of the very best for gaa coverage

I couldn't disagree more with his politics. But he knows GAA and he knows how to present, antagonize, and get the best out of analysts. He's very good on long form interviews too.

Just refreshing to hear someone passionate about the sports rather than the drab, non-insightful, nonsense we get on RTE.

Is it a once off pilot show or will there be a series?

They're looking for a sponsor alright... it's hoping to return for a 16 show run next year.

what do people think of this idea. Three forwards and backs who cannot come outside the 45 https://x.com/VMSportIE/status/1728160353471561728?s=20

Stupid idea tbh nearly impossible to regulate, if you just stop the short kick out it will solve a lot of problems. Every kick out should go a certain distance and be contested.

I think it's pretty good. Worth a trial. Pretty easy to get someone watch the 45 line.

Why should every kickout have to be contested? Technically the way it is now they can all be contested.

Soccer moved in the opposite direction funnily enough.

But as they said on the show, that will just lead to bunching of players in the middle.

If the kickout has to pass 45m for example, then teams will pull everyone outside the 45 because they know the ball can't be kicked to anyone inside the 45

I know what you mean technically but to me only the best teams are able to play through the lines in soccer. When they do play out form the back in soccer there is a massive amount of turnovers within a few passes. In Gaelic from a kick out you could have 50 passes without a challenge as the pitch is much bigger and a lot more players, it leads to a boring spectacle tbh

Might be worth a trial but i just think it could all be solved by getting rid of the short kick out

I actually think the opposite and teams would push up as they have a much better chance of winning a contested kick out rather than the kicker kicking it 20 yards to the corner back

Watched it back on the VM player after the Toy Show, very enjoyable and hopefully potentially a more permanent fixture.

Caught the first half of the show, thought it was good.

They rightly were hugely critical of the rule changes that will be trialed around kick-outs and free kicks and how badly thought out they are.

While I was sceptical of his proposed rule changes around player zones I have just learnt that there is a similar rule in lacrosse. It would be interesting to see how it works there before dismissing it outright. It would create the space that is needed to open up the game but isn't without issues either.

Definitely a better rule change than others being trialed.

Basketball also had similar problems with possession and teams being defensive and closing out games. They had to change the rules. And it worked.

He's done well with the podcast, pulling in almost €20,000 a month

Done very well. Think there's a significant drop off once inter county season ends though. He said the first time it happened he was going crazy but now realises the popularity comes and goes with the inter county season.

Funnily enough my favourite part of the year for his podcast is the club championship, Christy O'Connor is an excellent pundit.

He is. They all have their strengths. Even Hayes's bewilderment as to why everyone takes it all so seriously is refreshing. He has good contrast.

    Kernan is also excellent:

"It's tough to play in, because I know there's a better alternative," he told RTÉ Sport's Damian Lawlor.

"It's harder to coach the better alternative, but there's a better alternative to play than the modern day, and there's a better alternative to watch than the modern day. I don't think it needs a radical overhaul, but I do think that an awful lot of what is being coached at the moment is basic to coach, easy to understand and easy to implement.

"But teaching somebody how to create space, how to create separation if you're a half-forward from your half-back to receive a pass, giving the player at half-back the confidence to take on that pass, the earlier a half-forward gets the ball the earlier he can get it to a full forward - all these things flow if you're coached properly and you have the right plan in place.

"There was a stage when football was extremely enjoyable to watch - contests all over the field.

"Contests are what excite people, it's what gets crowds going. Players say you block out everything - but when you hear a crowd getting involved getting excited, it radiates onto the field. One complements the other.

"I just feel that if we keep going the way we're going, you are going to lose the key players, the marquee players, in every position in the field because at the moment they're not being coached in those positions.

"We're all being coached in a bland format where everybody runs up and down, everybody is supposed to be able to defend and attack in the same way."

Just hearing those comments from Kernan now, have to say 100% agree. The Gaa is a shallow pool and there aren't too many enlightened coaches out there. All we have seen with the last decade is copycat coaching of variations of what McGuinness did and bits of what the Dubs have done. At club level the amount of bluffers on the circuit means copycat coaching is even worse.
