2015 Audi A6 clutch replacement - suggestions?

    Hi All,

.......it's been on the way out but tonight it finally went kaput!

I noticed the clutch "acting up" over the last few weeks - tough to get into gear sometimes; other times the clutch would only come back half way so had to use foot to bring clutch back the full way (towards me). I had planned to get it looked at before now but life got in the way! Anyway, started her up earlier but it was having none of it - wouldn't go into any gear for me. The clutch is well and truly KO'd it seems.

I won't bore you with the fiasco with the AA and trying to get it towed home......it's currently "stranded" but in a relatively safe place.

So, I need to get it towed to a garage tomorrow all going well to get the clutch replaced (I'm assuming).

I'm in Dublin North (close to Malahide). Any suggestions of where best to go? I've been googling and see the likes of Euro Clutch (Dublin 13), Dublin Clutch and Gearbox Centre.........I've no particular affiliation with any garage. I've decided to stop using Audi main dealer as they're simply too expensive.

Car is a 152 reg by the way with about 112k kms on the clock. I could do without of course but need to get sorted quick.

Am wondering if anyone has any suggestions of where best to go? Also, I'm assuming it's going to be a 800-1000 quid job?

    Thanks in advance

You don’t need to go to a clutch specialist. Any mechanic can change a clutch.

Thanks User1998 - noted. I'll start making a few calls this morning

I got one done in same a6 as yours about 4 years ago.... €1,100 for clutch / flywheel replacement.

Like everything else it has more than likely gone up in price.

    Hi Moanin

Thanks for that. Only managed to ring two garages today about it - quoted 1500 in one and 2500 in the other!

I've a guy to call in the morning to see if he can do it so will see what is quoted there.

Not cheap whatever way you look at it but I'm reckoning around the 1500 mark is how it'll wash out. Painful.

Did a bit of research on it earlier - seems a common enough issue with Audi's and Audi A6's in particular. Lots of bad feedback in terms of DMF etc. Mileage seems to vary in terms of when it might go. I've around 112,500 kms on the clock. Not massive but hey, it's gone so no point in losing sleep......just prepare for beans on toast for the next month or two!!

if you are not in a rush for the car back, you can get an LUK clutch and flywheel kit for around 550 euro on auto doc. Then price a mechanic to fit it for you.

you can get a LUK clutch kit for half that price, but since you are doing the clutch you might as well do both.

if you are getting quotes, get quotes for supply and fit, also for fit only.

might be worth your while buying them yourself and getting them fit only.

Don't do it if you buy your own part and get someone to fit they won't stand over it

Jaysus 2500 grand clutch after 100k. I have a 2017 electric with 150k kms. Total service and repair cost including brakes but excluding tyres at main dealer currently at 700euro in TOTAL.

Very poor quality from Audi I have a 2012 avensis with 230 k km on the clock still on original clutch.

I've a 2008 audi A5 from new with 198k MILES on original clutch turbo gearbox etc and it's get driven at pretty much full acceleration doing short journeys all its life.

That's good going must be model specific issue.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,136 ✭✭✭Moanin

    That's some jump in price!

Mine was replaced with 320k kms on it. This was the original and replaced after 9 years!

Driving was a mix of motorway and city driving

Thanks guys. I bought the car second hand about 2.5 years ago or so. I've only put about 15k kms since then - I do a mix of motorway and shorter journeys......that's what I've been doing with all my cars over the years to be honest. Overall, not much driving but can't quite vouch for previous owners driving style. I am biased of course but wouldn't regard myself as a poor driver with poor driving style or any tendency to ride the clutch by any means.

Am rather disappointed I must admit that the clutch is gone........research on google tells me that it's not uncommon on this A6 model with many reporting that after some back and forth, they got sorted under warranty as mileage was so low and/or car was only a few years old.....some didn't get anything however. Seeing as how mine is now 8 years old, I can't imagine Audi would be too fussed about me..........perhaps I might mail them all the same; the worst they can say is no.

I know there's no bullet proof car by any means but it's left a bitter taste...

Clutches are not bullet proof regardless of make. They wear out.

Did you have someone look at it? It might be just a slave cylinder gone. Mileage seems very low for a clutch to be gone

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,128 ✭✭✭✭Flinty997

Early clutch wear is not THAT unusual.

Naturally, no two clutches are exactly the same. While they may have the same design and fit into the same types of car, a lot of the variation in how long a clutch lasts depends on the driver and the maintenance routine. Generally speaking, most clutches will last for around 60,000 miles – but this can vary from as little as 30,000 miles to as much as 100,000 miles.

This can depend on many factors, and not all of them are possible to control. For example, if you live and drive in a city, it’s likely that you’ll be doing a lot of stopping and starting at traffic lights, which will naturally wear your clutch down more than smooth, continuous driving on a motorway.

The symptoms sound a lot more like slave cylinder failure than the clutch itself but heyho it's not my money.

I'd get an actual mechanic to look at it rather than making a Google diagnosis or Mr clutch's website

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,128 ✭✭✭✭Flinty997

True. No mention of slipping or revs which you might expect.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 225 ✭✭shabbyalonso

    Cheers guys.

Yes, well I have jumped to an uneducated conclusion myself so it may be the slave cylinder......which would be a better result.

I'll be sure to get it looked at before doing anything in that case. I'll report back when I know more.

    Thanks for the input.

Problem is if is slave cylinder you still need take gearbox out so 🤷 in most cases you might as well change clutch and dmf

    Hi All

By way of update, I just got the car back today.

Clutch and flywheel kit installed along with replacement slave cylinder. 6 hours labour with total bill coming to EUR1771.

Never an ideal time to incur such a bill but such are the joys of motoring. Have only driven a few miles home but clutch does feel rather smooth.

You were Rode Bareback without a Saddle. Overcharged €500+

I didn't hear you offering a price before the works were undertaken.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,516 ✭✭✭XsApollo

Dual mass flywheel can be anywhere from 500 to 800 for an LUK one depending if you wanna buy from Europe for the cheaper end of things.

a clutch kit can be 300 to 500 also for an LUK depending if you wanna buy from Europe for the cheaper price.

    slave cylinder is what? 100-200?

so you are looking around 1000 to 1200 for the parts, and labour on top.

so 1700 was around the ball park if the mechanic was supplying the parts.

I had to get the clutch, DMF and slave cylinder changed on my focus recently and it came out to just under €1000, so add in a premium for parts suitable for an Audi and associated labour costs etc. €1700 ballpark probably sounds about right.

Hi, where did you get the work done? I've same symptoms as your A6 and been told it would cost minimum of €2500 for new clutch kit, thanks

Every time I change car my brother in law tells me he could've gotten a better deal. He's the only person I know that makes money on every car he buys!

Hey, where did you get done? I’ve been told I need to get my clutch and flywheel replaced on an Audi A6 and was quoted €2,800 in the first place I checked.

    not yet, still pricing around.
Car is running fine so waiting on another mechanic I know to give me a second opinion. If you have the name of a place please send it on in case I need the work done.

Ya They used to post here regularly. Great outfit by all accounts. I'd say fair pricing but not cheap. It will be right though.

Might be worth calling M8Automotive in Mitchelstown, they mentioned doing a 2016 one for €1500 when I spoke to them

George is great I have used him before but I wouldn't be traveling any distance for a simple clutch replacement, any mechanic can do it.

True but at the money involved, Id want to at least know they were a good outfit before leaving my car in.

I bought an old TT with new clutch fitted yet couldn't get gears properly and heavy pedal etc. Anyway, we made a deal and I bought it. I tackled the clutch job myself and found a brand new clutch but with loose bolts on the clutch plate, loose bolts on the gearbox and a flywheel so bad it should have never been reused..... so while the work is straight forward for any garage, the standard of work can be shocking.

Hi - sorry for delay……….I got mine done in Byrne Motor Works…..Feiltrim business park. It's between Swords/Feiltrim/Kinsealy/Malahide. From memory, total bill came to around EUR1750. What you've been quoted sounds quite excessive. It's not a cheap job regardless but I was happy with how mine was handled and thankfully, all running smoothly ever since!

Hi - not sure if you got sorted yet but just posted reply above (haven't been on boards for a while). Can be done for less than that I would think. I'm in Dublin myself. What year is your Audi?
