Hi all. I have numerous of these marks on the wall of an extension, somebody told me that the builder used metal fixings to fit the plasterboard to the batons and this is the result! Anyway, the walls need painting! Is there a specialist undercoat / primer that I should use before just lashing on the emulsion?! Many thanks!

I used Johnstones Advanced Stain Block Primer which is more expensive than others, but is shellac based and worked perfectly when we painted a renovated house from top to bottom. No bleed through marks visible from any plasterboard screws once applied and then painted over.

Had this exact same problem in a kitchen before...metal fixings showing through like that. The best advice (which I got here actually) was to cover the patches with one or two layers of a gloss paint, let it dry, and then roll away with emulsion. Worked perfectly for me, and while the marks do eventually return, it'll take years and by then you'll be due to repaint anyway.

Thank you! Silly question but do you paint the whole wall with the primer or just the marks?!

Put the primer on the marks only but can be a bit wider than the mark.

Could anybody recommend a good emulsion please?, I was in Pat McDonnell paints yesterday and they said I need to use a primer then two coats of emulsion ( they recommended a Zinser cover stain spray for the marks). Is this the general advice?, I was hoping not to use a primer and have never done so before on an internal wall!!

All the advice given was it needs some primer be it a gloss based to seal in or specialist like Zinser.

You need a primer, no an emulsion will not cover this.

If that's a brightly lit wall or is easily noticed then I think I'd prime the whole wall rather than spot-painting those. I've seen some of the primers and especially the gloss paints cause the final finish on the emulsion to be slightly different to the rest of the wall and it's annoying when that happens.
