Light goes on. Turn it off and it won't go on again.

Wife bought a fancy hanging light from Italy.

It takes G9 dimmable bulbs.

I put all 13 into it and it would not turn on. I took out all the bulbs. I put one in and it went on (dimming function worked also).

I left it on and put each individual bulb in turn. Every bulb lit up perfectly. All bulbs were working and dimming properly.

I turned it off and it wouldn't turn back on again.

Anyone got any ideas on a fault?

All bulbs were brand new and taken out out of their sealed packets.

They're halogen bulbs. House got a complete rewire. Dimmers are fitted. Bulbs are dimmable types.

Had a similar issue with G9 and some debenham lamp lights (6 in each), I think I just switched the bulbs over to some Osram LED (this was about 4 years back).

id say it’s tricky to recheck the connections so firstly I’d remove the dimmer switch and try an ordinary switch on it.

Is the dimmer rated for the load? 14x 35w halogen is ~500w. Try half the amount and see.

Probably too many on the one dimmer. Also, filament lamps have a high start current at switch on as resistance much lower when cold. 13+ on the one dimmer might be the problem.

Most LEDs don't work with a dimmer, afaik.

Sorry to correct myself: Dimmable LED ones do work on an LED specific dimmer. They may not (but sometimes do) work on a standard incandescent one.

With a standard dimmer, Use 1 or 2 halogen with the rest dimmable led's.

There used to be a soft start dimmer for incandescent , I think i recall fitting them

I fitted the 1000w dimmers a lot where the load was big the 250/400w dimmers gave a lot of trouble. The 1000w took up a whole box though.

Doesn't led lighting have a high inrush current also?

The incandescent inrush can easily be seen on the mechanical kwh meters as the light is switched on. I think I measured it at up to 10 times the running current before. So a 100w bulb would be like a 1kw load at power on. If the dimmer in this case is unable to get them glowing at all, it will be quite a decent load presented to the dimmer anytime it tries to power them up all on one go.
