Sky package query - adding netflix extend contract?

Parents are with sky, their package was uo in June and are paying full price. I've just learned that they were told that when they tried to cancel they were prevented from doing so because they added netflix to the account in Jan so the contract is extended to January but they have to pay the full price from june to Jan.…

Anyone have experience with this? It doesn't sound right to me, but how would they challenge it? Tv and broadband.
