Could anyone tell me if there's a grant and what is required, for the replacement of an oil boiler for a older person, 80 years?

The boiler is 20 yrs old and regularly leaks and smells of oil. It was patched up by a plumber and is serviced yearly.

Can she get something towards the cost of a new one? She is not on fuel allowance.

    Thank you.

  • Wouldn’t say there’s a hope of that considering new build houses are to be fitted with heat pumps, no more fireplaces, gas or oil boilers.

Now if they were to pop down to the community welfare officer they may be able to help and I can’t imagine they would refuse an elderly person with a dodgy boiler.

They'll prob ask for a plumbers report or the likes that says it’s beyond repair and just needs replacing. She will need to get quotes also on the cost involved (the boiler + the installation) as well. What you’d be applying for is Exceptional Needs Payment.

I also strongly suggest, assuming there’s no disqualifying reason why not, that they apply for fuel allowance.

A family member was approved for a brand new oil burner 2 years ago under the warmer home scheme (SEAI) as the house air tightness could not be improved enough to economically run a heat pump and gas was not available in the area so oil was the only option.

The guy who came out to survey the property had to phone the office to get approval for the burner as they are trying not to install them anymore but he advised that there was no other option and got the ok.

There is a long waiting time though so not sure if that's a viable option but worth calling the SEAI to check.

There's a €700 grant for adding heating controls whereby you can heat the water and radiators separately, this would be done as part of a new boiler install.
