My Daughters bmw318 last weekend suddenly developed a noticeable rattle from rhs(from inside car) of engine. Also when driving there was sort of grinding sound from the rhs front as if something was hitting wheel or rubbing against something. This increased with speed and stopped when not moving but the new engine noise was still present which increased with revs. Went to usual garage (independent) and instantly said turbo gone. Agreed to get reconditioned unit and said it be ready today.

She got a call this morning to say when doing work they found a bigger problem, the timing chain was stretched and had caused the damage to turbo. Now the engine has to come out to replace it. He said chain was 8mm slack and surprised it didnt destroy engine and because of faulty timing chain the turbo got damaged and other things which she cant remember. All our family have used this fairly big indo garage for years with no issues. Just trying to figure from anyone more familiar with engines if this is possible or did they possibly misdiagnose the problem in first place and only realized after removing turbo.
