Manslaughter in Sport. When does a tackle become a crime?

Matt Petgrave has been arrested by South Yorkshire Police, on suspicion of manslaughter. Ice hockey player Adam Johnson, whose neck was cut during a match, was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead. The Nottingham Panthers player was hit in the neck by a skate during a match against the Sheffield Steelers on 28 October. Petgrave hooked his leg around his own body to make contact with Johnson - it was a reverse kick, meaning the underside of his skate was coming upwards. It looked like he lined him up. The video is available on X.

When does a tackle become a crime? There are plenty of instances of where someone really does try to hurt/injure someone in games, in a moment of madness or whatever, purposefully, leading to concussion or a serious bone break.

Why don't we see more of these treated as crimes? I'm not advocating for either or. But I'm really interested in the topic.
